This is pretty awesome:
Now why didn’t that ever happen when I was on the Tube? Phat (you know, like the kids say) dance moves sure beat having your nose in some businessman’s armpit for 15 stops. Via Spacing.

Sphere: Related ContentI’ve just posted a new theatre review over at blogTO. It’s on The Robbers, an oddball, yet strangely charming, production by the University College Drama Program. Not great theatre, but an interesting evening.

Sphere: Related Content[UPDATE-02/01/2008] - The Afghan Senate, apparently realizing their dumbassery, has withdrawn their statement of support.
Last week, as part of my ongoing series on ‘religion gone mad’, I blogged about 23 year-old Pervez Kambaksh, sentenced to death for allegedly insulting Islam. I say ‘allegedly’, because it’s all an elaborate frame-up designed to put pressure on Kambaksh’s brother who has been reporting on the human rights abuses of local tribal authorities.
Now the Afghan Senate wants in on the corruption too! Despite lacking the legal authority to do so, they released a statement today supporting the verdict. Read the rest of this entry »

Sphere: Related ContentLast night, the Toronto District School Board narrowly approved a proposal to develop an ‘afro-centric’ school in the city. I can’t help but think this a bad idea. And I know I tread on the thinnest of ice here–as a (some would say painfully) white male who grew up in small towns, the experience of black urban youth is pretty far removed from my reality. Even so, I think we have the potential to do some real harm to these kids with a well-meaning but ultimately ill-conceived plan.
No doubt, the motivations for the scheme are above reproach. With a drop-out rate of nearly 40 per cent among afro-carribean males, Toronto’s high schools are clearly failing a significant proportion of its students. For the supporters of the afro-centric school, the best way to address this challenge is to create a school that embrace ”the sources and knowledge and experiences of peoples of African descent as an integral feature of the teaching and learning environment”. It’s a nice idea. Unfortunately, it talks past the real problems at hand. Read the rest of this entry »
Sphere: Related ContentThe old Deutsche Marine, previously the star of such dramas as “Jutland” and “Sink The Bismarck”, is now making a play for the lucrative humour market. Out today is their first comedic foray, “Ships Crashing into Each Other”.
Funny, but maybe not Golden Globes funny. I think if there had been more panicky and wildly gesticulating Germans running around after the collision, they could have had a real chance.
